Workshops

Our Workshop Programs

As part of our mission to foster executional excellence in equine art we have consistently offered workshops on many related topics and in several regional locations since 1986. Our topics range from composition to color usage to the finer details of effectively capturing the form and spirit of the horse—in various traditional media, from paint to pencil to sculpture and more. All AAEA workshops are led by AAEA members who are successful, practicing artists with a passion for sharing their gifts and providing grounded, useful instruction and “tricks of the trade” to students of all levels.

The lineup of courses and workshops at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY will be addedas soon as they are finalized. Attendance to all is limited so that students can receive personalized attention. They tend to fill fast, so we encourage early inquiry and signup.

Please note these AAEA Protocols:

Dogs are not permitted at AAEA workshops, exhibitions or events. The only dogs permitted will be designated service dogs.  If your service dog behaves inappropriately, the AAEA reserves the right to ask you to leave the workshop/event.

This workshop is intended for artists of all levels who have a desire to explore and deepen their knowledge of the medium of soft pastels, and want to learn techniques for painting horses with this challenging medium.

Leslie Hudson-Tolles, Signature Member of AAEA, MS in Art Education and 45 year veteran teacher would love to give you  "A LEG UP" from wherever you are in your creative painting, mixed media or drawing journey.  This workshop is different in that it is keyed to you, the artist not aparticular technique. The goal is to meet you where you are and giving you a boost along a path, or a less traveled road in your journey.

Spend three days drawing and learning the medium of scratchboard. Class will start with choosing subject matter, drawing, applying the drawing to the scratchboard and basic techniques to bring your image to life.  Color will be introduced. The simplicity of the medium makes for dramatic images with a minimum of tools and supplies.
