Using a palette with the ‘primaries’ but using ones that are not high in chroma. Wanting a painting to appear more naturalistic.
Radiant Yellow Gamblin Burnt Sienna Ultramarine blue
See second image for colour studies.
Study #1 Started with dull yellow, raw sienna, chroma black, Indian red Totally dull and terrible. Couldn’t get a green with any chroma. The black couldn’t read as a blue at all and couldn’t make green.
Study #2 Switched out the black for ultramarine blue. Got better greens than the first one, but overall the painting was duller than i wanted. Didn’t inspire at all.
Study #3 Switched the yellow (raw sienna) with gamblin radiant yellow. Didn’t want to use cadmium yellow light because it is too green, wanting a softer look. The radiant yellow has some opacity to it, something the cadmium yellow light doesn’t have. Really liking the way it looks. Great greens. Not too nuclear.
Study #4 Switched out the burnt sienna with Indian red. Too opaque and couldn’t get soft oranges of the horse with it. The yellow didn’t have enough strength to mix up a good orange and the red was too opaque.
