CYL is a pure middle yellow - not leaning greenish or orange. Perylene R is slightly dark in value, leans just slightly cool/blue, is transparent and has high tinting power. Viridian is mainly green, but leans blue. All three tube colors are comprised of a single pigment which results in clean color mixtures, not muddy, no matter the combination. Because this red and green choice both lean cool/blue, resulting mixtures can appear almost blue. A very dark near black can also be attained and pushed either warm or cool.
I was familiar with the working properties of CYL and Viridian, but not Perylene Red as much. I learned PR has a drying time in line with the others (not drying up on my palette). Its transparency and tinting power make it very versatile! The range of browns and grays possible with this three color combination of is extensive.
