Oscar Berninghaus "Passing" 1920. 16x20 oil on panel.

Berninghaus is one of my favorite artists.  He hailed from St. Louis, my home town, and his depictions of scenes and figures from the Southwest just feel very real to me.   They take me there.  New Mexico is one of my favorite places and I could easily live there.  The colors and the light are different than any other place I have been and I would never tire of them.  I chose "Passing" because it suggests a story.  Who was passing?  Were they on horseback, in an automobile?  Why were they out there?  What was this Navajo man thinking as they passed?  Where was he headed, riding one horse and leading another?  I wanted to see if I could recreate a painting that asked so many questions.  I enjoyed using phthalo turquoise as the blue in this picture.  And it also gave me practice at painting a human, something I haven't done a lot of.  This is another I have custom framed and will just keep my little bit of New Mexico on the wall.
