Per "An Artist's Life," Munnings autobiography, he purchased Duchess a dapple grey, 15.2, 6 year old for 33 guineas (approximately $50) at a Dublin horse sale, along with Patrick, a bay, 15.3, 4 year old in the spring of 1913.  He painted these in 1914.  These are two of my favorite paintings by Munnings.  His use of light and especially color, takes my breath away.    I wanted to see if I could capture the vibrancy he brought to these paintings.  What I learned was that when I thought they were finished, they weren't.  I had to keep going back and pushing the light, pushing the color, over and over again, when, had I been left on my own, I would have stopped, and they wouldn't have ended up where they did.  To me the paintings sing because of the pushing, and I love the "abstractness" of the landscapes.  I have custom framed them and will keep them because I just love them.
