For my three colors, I chose Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue & Yellow Ochre. Because this was my first (successful) attempt at a limited palette, I kept it fairly conservative. The horse I chose to paint is a Gypsy Vanner, Joah. His color is what's called Smokey Black Pearl. It's a very desirable color, especially in a breeding stallion like Joah. Originally, I was thinking of using Burnt Umber. But because of the pink around this horse's eyes and muzzle, I opted to use Burnt Sienna, which worked pretty well, I think. This exercise was beneficial in the sense that it really made me think about subtlety and temperature. I also learned that Yellow Ochre doesn't lend itself to mixing a very intense green. But even though the green was subtle, it works. This exercise got me to think about relying less on contrast and using a more nuanced approach to color. And that's a lesson that applies to any palette.
